PEAT RESTORATION WORKS – DUNGONNELL CABB

Lowry Building & Civil Engineering completed major peat restoration during Dungonnell CABB works for Northern Ireland Water by installing various dam types to successfully increase the hydrological effectiveness of the peat lands, restoring one of the best examples of blanket bog in Northern Ireland, re-establishing the invaluable habitat to rare, endangered species and reinstating the ability to trap and store carbon. This was also in aid of improving water quality into the Dungonnell Reservoir and requiring expensive treatment by to maintain water quality to the public supply.

The catchment area around Dungonnell Service Reservoir, located in the Garron Plateau, Co. Antrim is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), Special Protected Area (SPA) and Area of Scientific Interest (ASSI) as well as a Ramsar Site (wetland of international importance).

The project was completed over two phases to avoid bird breeding season, ensuring no disturbance was caused.

We were extremely proud for this project to be named Green Champion 2019 in the Building & Construction sector at Green Apple Environment Awards in House of Commons, Westminster for improving water quality, absorbing carbon and improving wildlife habitats.
